Grainferno - not loading sample on different systems

I use two separate computers - one in my studio and then also my laptop for when I’m out and about travelling or just not at the studio. All of my samples and sessions are housed within my dropbox folder so they automatically backup and mirror each other so I can easily work on either system.

When i work on an Ableton session on my laptop and have an instance of Grainferno, when I open the same session on my studio computer it doesn’t load up the sample I selected - it just loads Grainferno with the default sample, not the one I imported.

There is a slight difference in folder structure name due to the Mac usernames being different between laptop and studio, but other than that the folder structure is identical due to it all being read from my Dropbox folder (Macintosh HD > Users > Name > Dropbox). I know folder structure is important BUT I don’t have the same problem with other plug ins. For example, if I load a sample into Sampler in Ableton - it doesn’t matter if I’m on my laptop or studio computer, the sampler will always load up the right sample, and any changes (load a different sample etc) I make on one system appear when I open the session at a later date on the other system.

Can this be addressed? Luckily all the Grainferno settings remain the same but having to drag each sample every time is time consuming/very annoying!

Cheers :)

Sorry for the trouble here… Ableton is able to achieve what you’re referring to by creating .asd files for every sample in every project and it’s a different approach.

The way Grainferno calls on samples requires the pathing to remain intact and not break.

We’re still looking into ways to make things more robust and as close to perfect as possible in the future though! Some potential solutions come with the downside of file storage bloat that can ramp up quickly and we know users are weary of that. Let me know if you have any other references in mind.

At least for now I recommend making sure samples you’re working with are saved in the project folder or having a method for keeping track of that in the project (which you mentioned you’re already doing it seems). As well as bouncing to audio when you have something you’re happy with.

Or potentially change the name of the user if that’s a possibility?

This is on our radar it’s just a finicky one.

ahhh I’ve wondered what extra info was being saved in the .asd file along with warp info and whatnot - makes sense. I’ve got into the habit of making notes of what samples I’ve used and generally trying to keep them all in one folder just for my own custom Grainferno Samples that I’ve made, so that’ll have to do for now, but good to hear it’s on your radar. Cheers.
